In autumn 2016, Karam Alhindi volunteered with the economics think-tank Bruegel, working on the organisation’s flagship yearly event, the Bruegel Annual Meetings.

As part of his placement, Karam was invited to produce a small piece of research himself, on refugees and the labour market. Here you can read the results of his work, built on interviews with about 30 refugees from around the EU, on issues related to their personal situation, their understanding of the tax system in their host country, and the barriers they are facing to join the labour market.

The views expressed in the paper are those of the author and not of Bruegel or Tandem.
